About

THE EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Since the inception:

  • TheEMPC has used a 100% volunteer workforce, many of whom are unemployed, underemployed and/or branded unemployable to divert tons of food each year from the sanitary landfill to the tables of thousands of families and the hands of the homeless who other wise would go hungry.

  • The Employment Development Component has been instrumental at putting people to work and diverting them from homelessness, and restoring individuals to self sufficiency.

  • This has been a winning situation for the people who serve and the ones who are served.  In fact, many of the volunteers who have and now serve their fellow needy community members came because they needed food, and made a quality decision to help serve others. Each time individuals donate time and labor to the Food Distribution Program they are able to take home free groceries.

  • For many receiving free groceries, is not the only benefit of their willingness to give back.  However, as a result of the training, work experience, hands on coaching in work readiness, resources and supplies needed to go to work that we supply (transportation, clothing, certifications and documentation), plus assistance in applying, following up and securing employment; up to 85 people go to work and/or obtain upgrades in current jobs each year.  These individuals have been empowered to reverse the cycle of poverty and become self sufficient contributors to the community!

WINNING THE WAR AGAINST HUNGER PROGRAM (WWAHP) IN TACOMA/PIERCE COUNTY AND THE GREATER PUGET SOUND

THE HOLIDAY MEALS PROGRAMS:

The Holiday Meals Program serves the neediest families in targeted public schools providing them with elaborate Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners that includes everything for an elegant holiday weekend.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR TEENS:

Our newest holiday focus is on providing Christmas gifts for teens ages 13-19, since most programs that target needy children at Christmas, stop at age 12 years old leaving older siblings with little or nothing.

Teens identified through our internal food program, schools and social service programs receive an invitation to attend a party and shop in a free Holiday Bazaar to select gifts for themselves and the entire family plus decorations, furniture, clothing and household goods.  Teens must be accompanied by a parent who shops for the teen.  Then gifts are pre-wrapped and sent home with the parent to include in the families holiday celebration.

The Empowerment Center's sole support is from private individual, businesses and organizations who feel the call to support the neediest members of our society by becoming partners and supporting us financially.

Please give serious consideration to supporting  the future efforts of WWAHP, by becoming a partner on a one time or monthly basis. No amount is too small.
