I have noticed that many pet pawrents are unaware of how to perform CPR on their furry friends in case of an emergency. This lack of knowledge can be detrimental as every second counts when trying to save a pet's life.
If you lack Pet CPR training, you can implement these quick steps to hopefully get things jump started.
In a pet CPR situation, always remember the ABCs: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. First, ensure the airway is clear by gently extending the pet's head and neck. Then check for breathing by feeling or watching for the chest rise and fall. If the pet is not breathing, perform rescue breaths by closing the pet's mouth and breathing into their nose, repeating every 4-5 seconds. Next, check for a pulse by feeling for a heartbeat near the pet's left armpit or on the inside of the hind leg. If there is no pulse, provide chest compressions by placing one hand over the other on the pet's ribcage and compressing about one-third to one-half the chest width at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Always, and I mean ALWAYS ensure that you immediately take your critter to a vet when such a scare occurs.
