Knowing the Signs: When to Act Fast in a Pet Emergency

Offered by Holy Cow Critters

No pawrent ever wants to face a medical emergency with their beloved pet, but the truth is, these moments can happen quickly and without warning. One of the hardest parts is recognizing when something is truly urgent. Pets can’t tell us in words when they’re in pain, so we rely on small cues and gut instincts. Unfortunately, in moments of panic or uncertainty, even the most attentive pawrents can feel unsure about what to do next. That’s why I believe education is one of the most powerful gifts we can give ourselves and our animals.

Some emergencies are clear: difficulty breathing, seizures, loss of consciousness, bleeding that won't stop, or being hit by a car. But many others are harder to recognize right away. A change in gum color, rapid heart rate, bloating, repeated vomiting, extreme lethargy, or disorientation can all be signs of something serious. Knowing these early warning signs helps you act quickly, and in many cases, fast action can prevent a crisis from becoming life-threatening.

This is why I teach Pet CPR and First Aid classes. These classes give pawrents the confidence to stay calm and respond with purpose. You’ll learn how to check vital signs, handle choking, treat wounds, and give CPR if needed. These skills don’t replace professional veterinary care, but they buy you valuable time and give you tools to act effectively during those critical first minutes. Emergency situations are stressful, but preparation helps reduce the fear and keep you focused on helping your animal through it.

I also recommend that every pawrent build and keep a pet first aid kit in their home and vehicle. Having the right supplies ready can be incredibly helpful. At pawtree.com/annette, there are pet-friendly wellness and emergency products that support your ability to be ready when your pet needs you. A few well-chosen tools can offer peace of mind and help you feel empowered, not helpless.

As pawrents, we are our pets' safe place. They count on us to protect them, even when things are uncertain. My mission is to give you the knowledge, confidence, and support to show up for them in those moments with care and strength. If you ever feel unsure, know that you don’t have to go through it alone. I'm here to help you be prepared and stay grounded, so you and your pet can thrive together.
