How to Interview a Pet Professional Before You Hire

Choosing the right person to help care for your pet is a big decision. Whether you’re looking for a groomer, pet sitter, dog walker, or another service, it’s important to ask the right questions before you commit. I help pawrents navigate these choices all the time, and I always say the best outcomes start with a good conversation.

Here are a few questions I recommend asking when you interview a pet professional:

1. What experience do you have with pets like mine?
It’s not just about years in the industry. You want someone who has handled pets with similar needs, breeds, or temperaments. If your pet has medical conditions, make sure the person is comfortable managing them.

2. Are you trained in pet CPR and first aid?
Emergencies can happen. Knowing your pet professional is prepared adds peace of mind. If they’re not trained, that doesn’t mean they aren’t good at what they do, but it might mean you need to ask more about their emergency plans.

3. How do you handle unexpected behavior or stress?
This tells you a lot about their approach and how they’ll support your pet emotionally. You want someone who stays calm and focused and who has a plan when things don’t go perfectly.

4. Can I see your references or reviews?
A good professional won’t hesitate to provide this. Don’t be afraid to follow up with past clients and ask what their experience was like.

5. Do you have backup if you’re unavailable?
If something comes up, it’s good to know whether they have a plan in place. Your pet should never be left without care because of a schedule change or emergency.

6. What does a typical visit or session look like?
Details matter. Whether it’s a 30-minute walk or an energy treatment, understanding the structure helps set clear expectations on both sides.

When I help pawrents find the right pet care professionals, I take all of this into account. I only recommend people I’ve evaluated and matched based on each pet’s needs. Not every groomer or sitter fits every animal, and that’s okay. What matters most is the fit and the trust you feel.

As pawrents, we are our pet’s advocates. Taking the time to ask the right questions is one of the best ways we can protect their well-being. And if you ever need help finding the right match or understanding what questions to ask, I’m here to guide you.
