Creating a Legal Checklist for Downsizing and Moving

Offered by Caring Transitions

There is no easy way to say it. Downsizing is hard. It can feel like a heavy weight at the exact moment you or your loved ones are already carrying so much. Grief, change, uncertainty, all of it can arrive at once. I’ve seen families freeze in the face of these moments, not because they are unwilling but because the next right step feels unclear. That is where a legal checklist can be a true gift.

One of the first steps is to gather all legal documents. Wills, powers of attorney, medical directives, deeds, and financial records need to be accounted for and stored securely. These papers often sit untouched in drawers or filing cabinets for years. It helps to have a calm, trusted person help you go through them, making sure everything is current and in order.

If a move is coming, especially into senior living or assisted care, reviewing any contracts ahead of time is key. This includes the lease or care agreement at the new place, as well as any agreements for selling the home being left behind. It is also important to look at insurance policies and update addresses on all official records. And if estate planning has not been addressed in a while, now is a good time to revisit it with an attorney.
